Parrots for Poornima

Posted by aarohi | Posted in Acrylics, Furniture, Interiors | Posted on 09-04-2011

I first had the pleasure of interacting with Poornima during my exhibition last year in November at the Page Turners Book Store. She really liked the ’ India Khiladi Table‘ but by the time she decided on it, it had already been sold. And she wanted me to paint another one. But I was in no mood to do any more painting for a while.  So she waited!!

I am happy to say, I just completed a custom commission table for her :-) This table is to be a gift from her to her friends, ( Meera Naidu and Prashant Rao) who have just recently got married. Strangely, I had already started work on this table when she wrote asking if I could incorporate a motif from their wedding card into the table somehow.  The motif was a pair of parrots in a circle. And I of course said ” Sure, no problem”. I had already been working on the parrot motif on the table not knowing this connection!!!

I hope  Meera and Prashant enjoy much joy and happiness in their lives together.

In Deepika’s house

Deepika got in touch with me during my last exhibition and picked up two Ganapati thalis then. She wanted more!  And I had the pleasure of making two custom Ganapati thalis for her.  She was kind enough to send me pictures of them in her home :-)

The Wall

Here is my kitschy ode to the gods…with a little bit of luck thrown in with the koi fish!!

I changed the placement of the thali’s every time I worked on them. These thali’s will be available at the exhibition. Yes…the information on that is coming soon.

An all nighter…

So yesterday night was a really long night. I started painting at about 10 pm and was done by about 4.00 am. This 10′ by 4.5′ wall  is at the entrance to Bhupendra’s office. It’s the first thing one sees as you enter. It is the divider between the office reception and the work area.
So the idea was to have something simple and stark that would talk of what Bhupi’s company is all about and how he sees it’s working philosophy. Ramya and Bhupi really liked the signage on my kitchen wall and wanted me to make a customised version for the office. The colours used are in keeping with the company’s logo and corporate colours.

Item Bomb

Posted by aarohi | Posted in Acrylics, Furniture, Interiors, kitsch | Posted on 05-07-2010

My friends Awanish and Divya wanted me to ”do something” on a 30 year old table they had lying in the house. I decided to truly jazz it up. :-)

I happened to be watching TV while mulling over what to do. I realized that most people today would spend time mindlessly watching ‘dhin chak’ items songs but would probably not sit through a serious classical dance performance. And the Item Bomb table was born. It depicts pictures of Bollywood actresses in snazzy item song snapshots in the center while the periphery is made up of a string of traditional dancers. Dancers who have been sidelined, so to speak.

This was done almost two years ago. Dug up the pictures to show you. Not the best picture quality… I have been asked to make table lamps on the same theme!!

Kitsch again

Posted by aarohi | Posted in Event, Exhibition, Interiors, kitsch | Posted on 05-06-2010

I have just added five of eight new kettles to the ‘Kitsch‘ section and two new Khiladi tables to the ‘Furniture‘ section. For those of you in Bangalore, they are currently on display and ‘for sale’ at the Sattva Arthouse Studio in Whitefield. Only for two days though- 5th and 6th of June 2010.
( Told you- I’ve been busy !!)

Inspiration

This is the main wall in the kitchen. It holds the all important notice board. Now, my son is almost eight. He is at that stage where he can comfortably read some big words. This signage is an attempt to make sure some words and their meanings never leave him. That he is able to absorb them subliminally- zehan mein baith jayen
Love, Hope, Honour, Cherish, Truth, Zest, Strength and Desire.

Just like that…

Posted by aarohi | Posted in Interiors | Posted on 21-04-2010

I get a lot of mails from people wanting to know what my house looks like. So I thought over the next couple of days, I am going to post a few images of home.

The Lampost

The Lampost (Detail)

The Lampost (Detail)

We (my husband and I), bought this clock in Janpath (Delhi) and then carted it all the way to Bangalore. And guess what, it was available in Bangalore too!! It’s placed in our living area and kinda is at the center point between the dining and living areas. And can be viewed from both sides. We decided it needed a lilttle something and hence the lamp post was drawn on the wall. We are debating whether we need to add a bench next to it or paint a Bogart figure complete with cigar and smoke. What do you think?
